A humanitarian’s world revolves around the world, one such humble and benevolent philanthropist is Adv Y A Rahim, who is the president of Indian Association Sharjah. An MA LLB, he is a prominent advocate by profession. For the past ten terms, he has been serving as the secretary of Indian Association Sharjah. Prior to that, he has also served as the General Secretary and Managing Committee Member of the Association for three terms each. An altruistic persona and social worker, Adv. Rahim since many years has been a ray of hope for several needy and underprivileged Indians in UAE. During his earlier tenures as well as ongoing tenure with Indian Association Sharjah as its office-bearer he has had the privilege of honouring some of the landmark achievements.He has been able to seek permission to construct the current office complex of Indian Association Sharjah, which was earlier functioning at a rented place in Rolla, Sharjah. The new building has several facilities and it majorly comprises the offices of the following: the President, General Secretary, Treasurer, and several other officebearers of the Association. Moreover, there is also a huge Conference Room that can at a time accommodate more than 200 people and it can also be used as a makeshift place to organize Association-related functions and meetings. There is also a separate office within this premise that has been segregated for all kinds of document attestation and other related work of the Indian Consulate, Dubai.

Adv. Rahim has also lent help and sought permission for the construction of the Community Hall of the Association. This hall is spacious enough to accommodate more than 1000 people at a time and also has a permanent stage which is set with all kinds of modern visual & acoustic arrangements. This is just-theperfect place to stage all kinds of cultural events organized by the Association or by other similar organizations for various programmes. During 1996, he also managed to get a new block constructed at the Sharjah Indian School, which was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Kerala, E K Nayanar. He also made new camps and shifted the Nursery School there, so as to meet the increasing number of demands for the admissions. In addition to that, he also made sure a new wing for the Kinder Garten is constructed so that kids get spacious surroundings with more facilities. For the Sharjah Indian School, he also constructed a completely new Boys’ Wing, which could facilitate the admission of more than 5000 students, as per the directives of the Ministry of Education. This has been considered as the Silver Jubilee Block of the school. Simultaneously, in the same year, he also managed to provide over 7000 Air Tickets to several Indians seeking amnesty by the Govt. of UAE. The amount for such huge number of tickets was collected as donations from various prominent Indians settled in the UAE.

The construction of Crematorium for some Indian communities was done under his guidance on the plot that was graciously donated by H H Dr. Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member and ruler of Sharjah in Sajja. Adv. Rahim along with his team has also visited the Kutch region of Gujarat, which was worst affected by earthquake in 2001. They provided 35000 tonnes of essential goods and organized a camp to offer voluntary services to the victims and their families. He was actively involved in the problems of expatriate community in the Gulf and tried to solve them in liaison with the state as well as the central leaders in India. Some of these issues were lack of flights to India, high air fares during vacations, voting rights to the expatriate Indians, to name a few. He and his team make regular visits to Sharjah jails, hospitals

and labour camps to provide them necessary assistance in the forms of monetary support, free air tickets to those who have completed their term in the jail, and also get through all the legal formalities as per the Indian Consulate, Dubai.

He is one proud Indian who has represented the Indian Association Sharjah many times in the Pravasi Meets conducted by Governments of India as well as Kerala. Through his works he has brought to light several grievances and problems of Indians settled in the UAE.

For needy and underprivileged Indian patients, he has availed the facility of air tickets, if they need to be sent to India for medical reasons, lent stretchers and wheel chairs. Moreover, he has also offered to pay the medical expenses for many of the Indian patients who are incapable of meeting these expenses.

With the support of Indian Consulate Dubai, he has also managed to lend monetary support and free air tickets for many of the suffering Indians in the UAE. A humanitarian, Adv. Rahim has dedicated his life for the betterment and social upliftment of Indians settled in the UAE and who have been making ends meet to the educational as well as other expenses of their kids and family. He is one proud Indian who has represented the Indian Association Sharjah many times in the Pravasi Meets conducted by Governments of India as well as Kerala. Through his works he has brought to light several grievances and problems of Indians settled in the UAE. Under his Presidential tenure, he has also obtained one million sq. ft. of land in Sajja area for the construction of a new school in order to meet the increasing demand for admissions in the UAE. The construction of the same is in progress. At the same time, Adv. Rahim has attained AED 2.72 million from H H Dr. Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah for the construction of the Crematorium. Not just that, he is the one who has acquired the sanction for Embalming Facility in Sharjah as well as Northern Emirates of UAE for Indians. An advocate in the Bar Council of Kerala at the Kerala High Court located in Cochin, Adv. Rahim did his Bachelor’s in Law from Govt. Law College, Trivandrum in 1986-89.During those days, he was an active participant in student activities as he was the elected Office Bearer of the students’ Union.

He attained a Master’s Degree in Arts from the University of Kerala with a specialization in Arabic and Islamic Studies. He was among the top three rankers in the University. During his graduation days at the University College, Trivandrum, Adv. Rahim was the Secretary of the National Service Scheme and was very active in conducting many literacy camps in the slum areas.

Some of these are as follows: Sahrudaya Vedi Award in 2000, Seethi Haji Memorial Pravasi Ratnam Award in 2001, Indira Gandhi Veekshanam Forum Award for four consecutive years from 2001 to 2004, Ernakulam Pravasi Association Award in 2005, Mythri Sharjah Award in 2005, Kala UAE Award in 2005, Pravasi Ratnam Award in 2007, Deseeya Bala Tarangam Award in 2008, Sree Chithira Triunal Smaraka Award in 2008, Gem of India Gold Medal & Certificate of Excellence in 2013, and GIA International Award in 2013.

In 2014, he was honoured at the 44th Kerala State Senior Volleyball Championship Pala for the great deal of assistance he had offered.

In the same year, he was also honoured by the Ministry of Interior, Sharjah Police Head Quarters, Correctional & Punishment Organization Dept. for his support. A native of Shashtamkotta in Kollam district of Kerala, he is the son of the late K Younis Kunju, who was a retd. Railway Contractor, and Asma Beevi, a homemaker. He is married to Sheela Rahim, Managing Director of Al Rawi Printing Press LLC located in Sharjah.

The printing press is one of the leading printing houses in the country with the latest printing technologies, state- f-the-art production equipments and machineries. The couple has two children- Shyam Rahim, an MBA student, and Sruthi Rahim, who is pursuing Electronic Engineering. Both are studying in Dubai.

In his leisure hours, Adv. Rahim enjoys the company of books; he also takes time to play Badminton and keep himself active. Adv. Rahim’s Presidential tenure of the Indian Association Sharjah has been of great significance owing to his active indulgence for the uplifment of Indians residing in UAE.
